Career

I’ve been a science teacher in both mainstream and special education. I’ve held different roles including being an Advanced Skills Teacher (AST) and a deputy head in a special school academy.  I’ve got over twenty years of experience of working with children with learning difficulties, much of that as a member of the senior leadership team.  When I was appointed deputy head we were in special measures and by the time I left we were a good school (and judged outstanding for leadership!)  I’ve carried out just about every job in education from cleaning up sick to leading a school through an Ofsted inspection!

I have been fortunate to meet and work with many schools, departments and teachers across England (and sometimes further afield using online conferencing). Some of the things I’ve done include:

Presenting at regional conferences and CPD events

Organising and running bespoke CPD for schools and groups of schools

Providing training and mentoring for NQTs and trainee teachers

Providing SEN guidance for Science leaders

Sharing resources and strategies for teaching students with SEN through my website and the TES (currently around 825,000 downloads)

Working to support individual teachers in under-performing departments or individual teachers experiencing difficulties

Writing, reviewing and proofing for commercial publishers including Nelson Thornes and Oxford University Press

Running network meetings for heads of science, special school science teachers and science NQTs/RQTs
